Reading Tips to Build Fluency

  • Look for words you know

  • Look for word bits and parts (are there any digraphs or blends?)

  • Self-correct then reread

  • Read ahead

  • Reread aloud

  • Use picture clues to confirm meaning of text

  • Take your time and don't get frustrated, reading should be fun!

Test Taking Tips

  • Understand what each question is asking and underline key parts.

  • Read the question more than once.

  • Read all of the answer choices.

  • Use the processes of elimination to cross out any incorrect responses and make a good guess.

  • Apply facts and definitions when answering math questions.

  • Read and interpret graphs and tables when answering math questions.

  • Maintain a consistent pace throughout the test. Don't become "bogged down" on any one question.

Building Comprehension

Helpful Tips for Parents

  • Make predictions using the front cover of the book.

  • Do a picture walk of the book, but don't include the last few pages      (it might spoil the ending).

  • Make predictions as your child reads and confirm your predictions.

  • Sequence events every few pages.

  • Ask about main characters, who they are, what their names are, and what they did in the story.

  • Talk about the story, what did your child like best (or least). Have them give explanations for their reasons.
